School Meals


All of our meals are cooked on site each day by our kitchen manager, Dan.
Dan has graduated from the Chefs in Schools programme at Riverford Farm and he ensures our meals are nutritional and delicious.
The children love our school meals and they contribute ideas to each terms menu.

All our meals are nut free as we are a nut free school.

We have been making changes to the menu which are improving the nutritional value, reducing processed foods and broadening the variety of fresh, seasonal fruits and fresh vegetables on offer.
 We have a salad bar available daily and regularly talk to the children about their lunchtime experience.
We encourage the children to drink water and this is what is served in the lunch hall.

Packed lunches
We encourage parents to provide a healthy, balanced packed lunch including a main item (such as a sandwich,pasta salad or wrap), fruit and vegetables and a dairy item like yogurt or cheese.
No nuts, sweets or chocolate bars please.
 
Snacks
A healthy mid-morning snack can really help children stay focused, energised, and ready to learn throughout the day. Some healthy snack ideas include:
Fruit, vegetables sticks, malt loaf, yoghurt tubes, plain popcorn, rice cakes, crackers or a small sandwich.
As a nut-free school we request that all snacks are free from nuts and nut products. We’re also continuing to promote healthier eating habits, so we advise that the children avoid chocolate and crisps at break times.
Children in EYFS and KS1 (Bumblebees, Ladybirds and Dragonflies) receive free fruit or vegetable each day through the government scheme.

Suppliers
Our fresh fruit and vegetables are provided by BDF in Newton Abbot who are a local family run business who supply local produce.
 Our meat is supplied by R D Johns in Newton Abbot who use local farms and trusted suppliers to source their meat.
 Our wholesale items come from BDF and R D Johns.
All key stage 1 pupils (Reception, Years 1 & 2) receive free school meals.

From September 2026, the cost of a school meal for key stage 2 children (Years 3, 4, 5 & 6) is £2.70. 
 

Free School Meals
You may be entitled to claim free school meals for your child if you receive any of the following
  • Universal Credit (provided you have an annual net earned income of no more than £7,400, as assessed by earnings from up to three of your most recent assessment periods).
  • Income Support (IS)
  • Income-based Jobseekers Allowance (IBSJA)
  • Income-related Employment and Support Allowance (IRESA)
  • The guaranteed element of State Pension Credit
  • Support under Part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999
  • Child Tax Credit (provided you’re not also entitled to Working Tax Credit and have an annual gross income as assessed by Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs, that does not exceed £16,190)
  • Working Tax Credit run-on (the payment you get for a further 4 weeks after you stop qualifying for Working Tax Credit)

This system is discrete and will give you an instant decision on your eligibility. You will then need to email a screen-shot to prove eligibility to our school (adminstokegabriel@thelink.academy). All children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 are eligible for free school meals. However, some of these children (and older children) would also be eligible under the original free school meals scheme (details above) and it is very important to our schools that we still identify these pupils. This is because each child registered under the original scheme attracts valuable funding for their school.

If you believe that your child is eligible for a free school meal, whatever age, would you kindly help the school by ensuring that you apply. Please ring 0345 155 1019 for further information. (If you currently receive free meals, under the original scheme, then there is no need to reapply at this time).

Even if you do not actually wish your child to have a school meal, you can still apply so that the school receives funding to help support the children.
